Grapes are virtually a storehouse of health promoting compounds. The skins contain phenolic acids with powerful antibiotic and antiseptic properties; flavones or yellow pigments such as caempherol, quercetin and myricetin that are strong antioxidants; anthocyanidins or red pigments ; phytoalexines like resveratrol, powerful fungicides that inhibit platelet aggregation and equally boost HDL (good) cholesterol, and no doubt other beneficial substances, the properties of which we do not quite understand yet.
