A precocious killer Overall, cancer is the second cause of death in western society, second only to heart attacks. But cancer is the leading cause of death in American women aged 15-55, and equally in young American adults aged 15-35. Leading the list of various cancers is lung cancer, and numerous studies have documented the link between smoking and cancer of the lungs. Yet it would be a gross oversimplification to stop there, as it is frequently done in the majority of these studies. The causes of cancer are far more complex than usually realized, and lung cancer can serve as an example to show the nature of this complexity. Smoking and lung cancer Again, late in the 20th century, some of the world's greatest smokers were the Greeks. Yet their figures for lung cancer were lower than a great many nationalities that smoke less. Such statistics seem sufficient to dispute the well-established connection of smoking with lung cancer. Only that would be unrealistic. There is no question about the link of smoking with lung cancer. The unorthodox statistics is part of the complexity previously mentioned, and the fact that epidemiological studies investigating a simple association (i.e. smoking-lung cancer), can neither examine nor account for the complexity of living. The importance of a vigorous immune system They ate a lot more bread, in fact 3-5 times as much as they do now, and much of this bread with all or nearly all its complement of bran. Now we know that bran, especially wheat bran, can speed up the metabolism of estrogens and dramatically reduce their circulating levels in females, acting as powerful preventive factor against breast, colon and other cancers. They ate their vegetables and fruits in season, if for no other reason than a lack of choice. But this meant getting all the benefits the foods had to offer in terms of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and phytochemicals, while at the same time by not being available the year round obliged the people to vary their plant diet. In short, their immune system was in a far better position to protect them from cancer. And today we also know that a vigorous immune system may be the best protection against most cancers as against most other chronic degenerative diseases.. Our program |
